Lonely Learning pays homeless adults to read books that change lives — and opens contractor and supervisor roles to those who walk the rungs. Built on patented attention-verification technology, funded by sponsors who want their dollars to reach the people the system forgets.
Below is the production reader, running John 1. Press Play — audio reads aloud while you scroll the text yourself. The system awards a point only when the spoken paragraph is inside the highlight zone. This concurrent-agreement check is the patented attention verification: ears, eyes, and hand must all be engaged at once.
John · Chapter 1
In the beginning was the Word, and the Word was with God, and the Word was God.
The same was in the beginning with God.
All things were made by him; and without him was not any thing made that was made.
In him was life; and the life was the light of men.
And the light shineth in darkness; and the darkness comprehended it not.
There was a man sent from God, whose name was John.
The same came for a witness, to bear witness of the Light, that all men through him might believe.
He was not that Light, but was sent to bear witness of that Light.
That was the true Light, which lighteth every man that cometh into the world.
He was in the world, and the world was made by him, and the world knew him not.
He came unto his own, and his own received him not.
But as many as received him, to them gave he power to become the sons of God, even to them that believe on his name:
Which were born, not of blood, nor of the will of the flesh, nor of the will of man, but of God.
And the Word was made flesh, and dwelt among us, (and we beheld his glory, the glory as of the only begotten of the Father,) full of grace and truth.
John bare witness of him, and cried, saying, This was he of whom I spake, He that cometh after me is preferred before me: for he was before me.
And of his fulness have all we received, and grace for grace.
For the law was given by Moses, but grace and truth came by Jesus Christ.
No man hath seen God at any time; the only begotten Son, which is in the bosom of the Father, he hath declared him.
Every design choice in this reader exists so it cannot be gamed. Below is the version that survived contact with reality — and the heart of our patent.
The highlight zone is stationary. The Learner must scroll text into it themselves while audio reads aloud. Hand, ears, and eyes all engaged.
Each second, the system checks whether the currently-spoken paragraph is inside the highlight zone. Mismatch = no point. This concurrent-agreement check is the patented core.
Earnings reveal only on pause. Closes the loophole of muting audio and timing scrolls against the points display.
Every dollar a sponsor contributes funds one of four roles. People move between them by self-selection. The platform is the rungs; the climb is theirs.
Read books that have changed lives — Marcus Aurelius, Booker T. Washington, James Allen, the Bible — on a phone you already own. Attention verified. No achievement gates. The payment is a gift, not a wage.
Recruit, vouch for, and check in with other Learners. A 1099 side job for people who know the population because they've lived it. Self- selected. Caps naturally with the number of Learners overseen.
Drawn from existing homeless-services professionals — case workers, shelter staff, reentry coordinators — who add platform supervision to their work. Their existing job doesn't compete with this one. It integrates.
Funds reading hours at a chosen rate. Receives transparent reports of verified attention, payouts made, and Learners who moved into Advocate and Leader roles during the funding period. Tax-advantaged structure available.
The pay is structured as a gift, not a wage — the same legal character as a private scholarship. So it preserves dignity, avoids wage-regulation friction, and lets sponsors give the way they'd give to a foundation.
Attention-verification IP (provisional patent filed) is the technical differentiator. AI doesn't just track reading — it makes the payment release decision. Defensible, unusual use of AI in production.

Lonely Learning is our 2026 Build with Gemini XPRIZE submission in the Money & Financial Access category. Judging completes September 2026. Sponsor support during the window is decisive.
Pick a book. Read at your own pace. The reader works on the cheapest smartphone — no special hardware, no kiosks, no schedules.
Our patented verification confirms the reading was genuine. The AI — not a deterministic rule — releases the gift for each verified session.
Verified earnings go out via Tremendous to a payout method the Learner actually has access to — gift cards, prepaid debit, Cash App, Venmo. No bank account required.
Lonely Learning is in its 90-day XPRIZE build window with real Learners, real payouts, and real graduation paths. Sponsor capital between now and August 17 is decisive.
